Both low amyloid beta-42 levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF Aβ42) and amyloid deposition on positron emission tomography (PET) are biomarkers in Alzheimer disease. Because the temporal relation between the two amyloid biomarkers is not well established, researchers conducted a prospective study of 437 older adults (aged 55–90 years) with normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment, identified from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database. Amyloid deposition was determined by low CSF Aβ42 levels (<182.4 ng/L) and elevated 18-F-florbetapir standardized uptake ratios (>0.83) on PET imaging at baseline.
