To determine the degree to which mindfulness can contribute to prevention of relapse and remission of depression, a British group conducted a meta-analysis of individual patient data from nine randomized, controlled, relapse-prevention studies.
The meta-analysis covered 1258 depressed patients (median age, 47; 75% women) who were in full or partial remission from a recurrent episode of major depression; most patients had ≥5 previous episodes. Six studies were previously subject to meta-analysis. The study arms were manualized mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) versus other treatments, including maintenance antidepressant medication. Follow-up lasted ≤60 weeks.
