To examine the frequency and outcomes of exposures among children aged <6 years to e-cigarettes (including nicotine device or liquid nicotine), cigarettes, and other tobacco products (e.g., cigars, chewing tobacco), investigators analyzed data from calls to U.S. Poison Control Centers made from January 2012 through April 2015. Results were as follows:
Of roughly 29,000 tobacco/nicotine exposures reported, 80% involved children aged <2 years, 96% were ingestions, and 60% were related to cigarettes, 14% to e-cigarettes, and 16% to other tobacco products (mostly chewing tobacco and snuff).
Adjusting for seasonal trends, the number of monthly calls related to all tobacco products increased by 73%, and the increase was attributable to e-cigarette …
