Because platelets are known to play a role in the pathophysiology of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), researchers evaluated the efficacy and safety of aspirin for prevention of ARDS in the important multicenter Lung Injury Prevention Study with Aspirin (LIPS-A) trial.
Four hundred patients admitted through the emergency department who were at high risk for ARDS (defined as lung injury prediction score ≥4) were randomized to aspirin (325 mg loading dose followed by 81 mg daily) or placebo. The first dose was given within 24 hours after presentation and treatment continued for 7 days or until discharge or death. Patients also received up-to-date lung injury preventive care thanks to use of the Checklist for Lung Injury Prevention. T…
