The WHO classification of hematopoietic and lymphoid tumors, last published in 2008, is the international diagnostic standard for all lymphoid and myeloid malignancies. Rapid advances in molecular and cellular biomarkers, including many with prognostic or predictive importance, have both refined diagnostic subtypes and facilitated the use of molecularly targeted treatment regimens. Highlights of revisions to the WHO classification based on these advances are presented in two publications, one focused on myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemias, and the other on lymphoid neoplasms.
