Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with poor prognosis, high mortality, and low treatment response. These researchers examined a novel approach, parent-focused therapy (PFT), in which a therapist works only with parents while a nurse provides support to the teenaged patient.
In this randomized study, the comparison treatment was family-based therapy (FBT). Both treatments involved 18 sessions over 6 months and were manual-based. Unlike PFT, FBT includes a family meal session. Blinded raters conducted all assessments. Analyses were performed on 106 participants (PFT, 51; FBT, 55; mean age, 15.5; 88% female).
