Research has shown exercise to be an effective treatment for mild-to-moderate depression although many studies have had methodological weaknesses. In a new, carefully designed, randomized, controlled, 12-week study, researchers examined effects of exercise on functioning and quality of life in 106 adults with nonpsychotic major depressive disorder (MDD) who had only partially responded to adequate treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (mean age, 48; 87% white, 85% women).
The two study arms were high- or low-dose individualized aerobic exercise (16 kcal/kg or 4 kcal/kg, respectively). The high-dose intervention was designed to meet current public health recommendations of ≥150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise.…
