To assess temporal patterns of gunshot wound (GSW) severity and mortality, investigators analyzed trauma registry data from a Level 1 trauma center in Denver, Colorado and County, trauma death records from 2000 to 2013. The registry included all trauma patients who died in the hospital, were hospitalized, or required more than a 12-hour observation time.
Among nearly 29,000 registry patients, injuries were from GSWs (6%), stabbings (6%), pedestrian accidents (7%), assaults (9%), falls (24%), motor vehicle crashes (26%), and other mechanisms (22%).
