To help women and their clinicians assess the relative risks associated with depression and its treatment during pregnancy, investigators conducted a meta-analysis of 23 randomized studies (25,440 participants) in which pregnancy outcomes were compared among women with untreated depression versus those without depression.
Pregnant women with untreated depression had significantly higher risk for preterm birth (<37 weeks; odds ratio, 1.56) and low birth weight (<2500 g; OR, 1.96) than women without depression. In the five studies reporting disclosures of industry sponsorship, risk for preterm birth was substantially higher than in the nine studies not reporting such funding (OR, 2.50 vs. 1.34).
