The value of implementing the sepsis bundle — early patient identification, prompt infection source control, and aggressive fluid resuscitation — is well-studied among those with severe sepsis, including those with lactate levels ≥4 mmol/L. However, patients with less-severe illness have been little studied. Now, researchers have retrospectively studied patients with an admission diagnosis of sepsis and a serum lactate between 2 and 4 mmol/L at 21 community hospitals both before and after implementation of a procedure bundle consisting of antibiotics, serial measurement of lactate, and fluid resuscitation.
