Binge-eating disorder (BED) affects ≤30% of obese populations and even higher percentages of severely obese and treatment-seeking patients, complicates and limits treatment adherence to medically supervised diets (including after bariatric surgery), and contributes to other morbidities. In an NIH-funded systematic review and meta-analysis of 34 randomized, controlled trials, researchers considered the benefits and harms of treating BED.
Most studies were short-term and industry-sponsored: 19 compared medication with placebo, 6 compared medication plus cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with placebo, and 9 compared CBT (therapist-led or guided self-help) with waitlists.
