The decline in cardiovascular mortality over the past several decades has been a cause for celebration. However, concerns have been raised that some recent trends in risk factors, especially those related to obesity, might counter this progress. These investigators used the CDC's Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research data system to assess recent national trends in mortality rates for various conditions including cardiovascular disease. The dataset included information from all death certificates filed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
