A large outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) occurred in South Korea in May–July 2015, following exposure to a traveler infected with MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV) returning from the Middle East (Patient 1). This report provides detailed information regarding transmission of MERS-CoV infection from an infected contact (Patient 14) of Patient 1.
Patient 14 likely acquired MERS-CoV from Patient 1 between May 15 and 17, while receiving care for community acquired pneumonia. He presented to Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, on May 27, 2015, with progressive respiratory decline.
