Nonstructural causes of abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) include cancer-related coagulopathies. To estimate the proportion of women with hematologic malignancies who initially present with AUB, investigators conducted a retrospective analysis of 10,682 women with hematologic cancer who were treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center over a 14-year interval.
One postmenopausal woman and 37 premenopausal women (overall median age, 34) had new-onset AUB as their chief presenting symptom; thus, an estimated 3.6 per 1000 women with hematologic cancer presented initially with AUB.
