With their typically high rates of morbidity and mortality, patients with cirrhosis are frequently admitted and readmitted to the hospital. Their 90-day readmission rate has been estimated at as high as 50%. Understanding the causes of such readmissions, especially those that are modifiable, could lead to lower medical costs and improved outcomes in this population.
In the current study, researchers assessed 30-day and 90-day hospital readmission occurrence and causes among patients with cirrhosis admitted to hospitals in several U.S. states in 2011.
