Trisomies 13 and 18 are complex genetic conditions for which decisions for major surgeries are complicated by the absence of long-term outcome data. In a retrospective, 21-year review, using data from an Ontario, Canada health database, researchers assessed surgical interventions and outcomes in 174 children with trisomy 13 and 254 with trisomy 18. The median age of survival was 13 and 9 days, respectively, in children with trisomies 13 and 18.
Among children with trisomies 13 and 18 who lived to 6 months, survival at age 10 years was 51% and 60%, respectively.
