Clinical remission is the ultimate goal of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) therapies, and, since the introduction of biologic therapies and strategies for tight control and medication escalations, outcomes have improved greatly. Ultrasound is more sensitive than clinical examination for detecting joint inflammation, and some rheumatologists are using it as a primary tool to manage disease. It can improve diagnostic accuracy by showing synovitis and erosions and can improve accuracy of joint injections. However, whether ultrasound evaluation improves RA outcomes is unknown.
