How often are patients who are admitted with new-onset heart failure (HF) tested for ischemic coronary artery disease (CAD)? Using claims data from 2010 to 2014, investigators analyzed 67,161 patients with new-onset HF, continuous insurance coverage, and 90-day follow-up data. More than half of the cohort had diagnoses of CAD at before their initial HF hospitalizations.
Only 17.5% of patients underwent testing for ischemic CAD during their initial hospitalizations, a percentage that increased to 27.4% by 90 days. Stress testing (either stress echocardiography or nuclear stress testing) was undertaken in 7.9% of patients during their initial hospitalizations (14.6% at 90 days), and 11.1% underwent coronary angiography during this time (16.5% …
