The accuracy of depression diagnosis in adults is a continuing concern, especially in light of substantially higher antidepressant use in recent years. To assess the relation between depression diagnosis and treatment for depression in U.S. adults, investigators examined data on 46,417 adults who responded to national medical expenditure surveys in 2012 and 2013; surveys included a two-question depression screen.
Among those surveyed, 8.4% screened positive for depression, ranging from nearly 4% in the highest income quartile to 18% in the lowest quartile; only 29% of screen-positive respondents received any treatment for depression during the survey year.
