To examine whether cecal insertion time is associated with adenoma detection during colonoscopy, researchers analyzed data from a randomized trial on cap-assisted colonoscopy conducted at two U.S. academic medical centers.
Among 1043 participants aged 50 to 89 years who underwent colonoscopy by one of 10 board-certified gastroenterologists, median cecal insertion time was 5.3 minutes, and median withdrawal time was 8.6 minutes. Insertion time and withdrawal time were not related. The mean number of adenomas detected per patient decreased as the cecal insertion time increased, from 1.1 in the fastest quartile to 0.7 in the slowest quartile.
