The direct anticoagulants dabigatran and rivaroxaban are at least as effective as warfarin, with fewer major bleeding events. However, whether this is true in Asian cohorts is uncertain because of Asians' elevated risk for intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) with warfarin. Now, researchers have analyzed data on patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, which covers >99% of the population.
The study comprised 5921 patients taking dabigatran, 3916 taking rivaroxaban, and 5251 patients taking warfarin. Propensity analysis was used to adjust for group differences.
