Serrated colorectal polyps include hyperplastic polyps, sessile serrated polyps (SSPs; or sessile serrated adenomas), and traditional serrated adenomas. In a systematic review and meta-analysis, investigators identified 43 studies of lifestyle factors and risk for developing serrated polyps (hyperplastic polyps plus SSPs or SSPs alone). Traditional serrated adenomas are too rare for the review to have gleaned meaningful data about them.
The strongest lifestyle risk factor was tobacco smoking (relative risks [RRs], 2.5 for serrated polyps collectively and 3.4 for SSPs alone — both statistically significant). For high (vs. low) alcohol consumption, the RR for all serrated polyps was 1.3 and a higher 1.9 for SSPs alone, again both significant. …
