Most of our information on pediatric Zika virus disease comes from cases of prenatal infection. Reports of postnatally acquired infection have been more limited.
Researchers reviewed 158 confirmed or probable cases of Zika virus infection in children <18 years old that were reported to the CDC from 30 states between January 2015 and July 2016. All patients acquired Zika infection following travel to an endemic area. Median age was 14 years (range, 1 month to 17 years), and 56% were female. Symptoms included rash (82%), fever (55%), conjunctivitis (29%), and arthralgias (28%). Two children were hospitalized; there were no deaths.
