Concerns about widespread Internet addiction, particularly associated with Internet gaming, led to the following DSM-5 proposed criteria for Internet gaming disorder: preoccupation with Internet gaming, withdrawal, tolerance, loss of control, continued use, misleading of others, use as escape, reduced interests, and jeopardized opportunities. Only non-gambling Internet games are included in the disorder; other social uses of the Internet are not. To determine the prevalence of Internet gaming and associated impairments, investigators studied four cohorts totaling nearly 19,000 adults (age, >18 years) from the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Germany. All participants were recruited using Web-based epidemiological ascertainment methods.
