Bariatric surgery rates have increased substantially, but some studies have reported postsurgical psychiatric sequelae. In a two-part study, investigators used Danish national registry data to study psychiatric difficulties after bariatric surgery.
First, 12,612 patients receiving bariatric surgery from 1997 through 2013 who had no prior psychiatric contacts (mean age, 42; women, 81%) were compared with 9839 nonsurgical, moderately to severely obese, contemporaneous patients. Bariatric patients were followed for 4 years on average postsurgery.
