Although human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination was added to the vaccination schedule more than a decade ago, its uptake has trailed that of other recommended vaccines. Strategies to emphasize the cancer-prevention benefits of the HPV vaccine have not significantly increased coverage. However, prior research has shown that a strong recommendation from a health care provider along with presumptive, rather than participatory, language can increase parental acceptance of adolescent vaccines (Am J Public Health 2015; 105:1998).
