Understanding long-term prognosis following first episodes of psychotic disorders is important in planning interventions. In a 20-year prospective study, investigators analyzed data from 485 first-admission patients (mean age at baseline, 29; 57% male) with psychotic disorders who received at least one social functioning assessment. Premorbid functioning was assessed at 6 months, and ongoing social functioning at 2, 4, 10, and 20 years.
Diagnoses at the 10-year (or last available) visit were schizophrenia spectrum disorders (269 patients; 77% schizophrenia, 22% schizoaffective disorder), major depression with psychosis (77), and bipolar disorder with psychosis (139).
