Mumps is an acute viral infection affecting primarily parotid and other salivary glands. Vaccination has reduced the incidence to 0.1 case per 100,000 population annually in the U.S. Formerly a childhood disease with few sequelae, the rare mumps cases now typically occur in young adults and carry increased complications including orchitis, oophoritis, and aseptic meningitis. Outbreaks involving this population occur sporadically, especially in congregate communities.
