Reasons for variation in the incidence of gastric cancer worldwide are unclear. Investigators studied the effect of race and Hispanic ethnicity on the risk for gastric cancer among members of a large Southern California healthcare system. They retrospectively collected information of patients with gastric cancer diagnosed between 2008 through 2014 according to self-reported race and Hispanic ethnicity. They then conducted a case-cohort study, matching controls by age and gender to patients with incident gastric cancer.
