Salmonellae are the most common bacterial causes of foodborne enteric disease in the U.S. The year-round cultivation and importation of previously seasonal, local vegetables and produce coupled with large centers of distribution has meant that one need not travel to be exposed to foodborne enteric pathogens.
In April 2016, a multistate cluster of 14 patients infected with Salmonella enterica serotype Oslo was detected by the national foodborne disease network known as PulseNet. All isolates were identical (XbaI PFGE pattern OSLX01.0090) by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). No previous illness was attributed to this serotype.
