Might “masculinity” help explain why men more often die by suicide than women? Characterized by such features as stoicism, toughness, drive, being a provider, and self-reliance, masculinity is threatened by job loss and associated with depression, alcohol abuse, and suicidality. Now, investigators have analyzed wave-one data from the largest Australian longitudinal study of men's health involving 13,884 men (mean age, 38; employed, 92%; actually or de facto married, 67%).
