In the era of multi-drug–resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae and increasing rates of gonorrhea particularly among MSM, we urgently need new prevention and treatment approaches. To this end, investigators from Australia conducted two studies. In the first, they evaluated two alcohol-containing Listerine products “in vitro” for activity against N. gonorrhoeae. In vitro Listerine caused a reduction in N. gonorrhoeae colony counts but no inhibitory activity. In the second study, they randomized MSM with pharyngeal gonorrhea by nucleic-acid amplification testing to receive saline or Listerine Cool Mint. Among 196 men randomized (104 to Listerine and 92 to saline), 58 (30%) were culture positive (33 in the Listerine group and 25 in the saline group).…
