Most myocardial infarctions (MIs) in the U.S. general population are type 1 MI (T1MI), caused by coronary artery occlusion in the setting of unstable atherosclerotic plaque. A smaller fraction (about 10%) are type 2 MI (T2MI), resulting from a mismatch between oxygen demand and supply, as can occur during severe hypotension or because of vasoconstriction induced by cocaine or other drugs. Approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and management of MI differ substantially based on etiology.
