The first known isolation of Candida auris, from an external auditory canal in Japan, was followed soon after by 15 otitis media and 3 blood stream infections (BSIs) with this organism in Korea. In the intervening years, C. auris fungemia has been reported in India, South Africa, Kuwait, South America and, in 2013, in the U.S. (NEJM JW Infect Dis Jan 2017 and MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2016; 65;1234). The infections' resistance to antifungal agents and high mortality have been noted.
