The Mediterranean diet — with high fruit, vegetable, legume, and cereal consumption; moderate fish consumption; and low red meat and poultry intake — has been associated with healthy aging. In this Scottish study, researchers investigated the effect of Mediterranean diet on structural brain aging in a cohort of 1091 nondemented adults. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was determined by food frequency questionnaire scores at about age 70. Total brain volume, gray matter volume, and cortical thickness were determined from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed 3 and 6 years after baseline.
