Diabetes rates are elevated in patients with schizophrenia, but questions persist regarding whether the vulnerability is conferred by endogenous schizophrenia or antipsychotic medications (see also NEJM JW Psychiatry Jan 27 2017; [e-pub] and JAMA Psychiatry 2017 Jan 11; [e-pub]). Using Danish national registry data on all 2,736,510 citizens born from 1977 through 2012, investigators compared those who developed diabetes (n=14,118), those with schizophrenia (n=8,945), and the general population.
