Retrospective data consistently show that detection during colonoscopy is positively associated with withdrawal time, and a recent study showed that prevention of colon cancer was associated with withdrawal time.
In the current study, researchers took a new approach to testing whether withdrawal time is positively associated with detection. In a prospective trial, 200 patients were randomized to undergo colonoscopy with a withdrawal time of 3 minutes or 6 minutes, followed by a second withdrawal lasting 6 minutes in both study arms. Four highly skilled endoscopists performed 50 colonoscopies each.
