Laboratory-based polysomnography (PSG) employs multiple channels to collect data on sleep efficiency, arousals, apneas and hypopneas, oxygen saturation, and other physiological factors. In 2008, Medicare approved home sleep testing; many home-based sleep studies involve limited-channel testing for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
In this Australian study, 406 patients with suspected OSA underwent full laboratory PSG and then were randomized to one of three groups, based on the level of sleep study data to be disclosed to their treating physicians:
