Depressive symptoms are prevalent among infertile women. To assess the impact of self-reported depressive symptoms on likelihood of initiating fertility treatment, researchers sent short electronic questionnaires (validated to screen for mental health disorders) to women seen for new infertility consultations.
Of 959 recipients, 416 completed the questionnaires; of these, 41% screened positive for depression. Women who screened positive for depression were more likely to be nulliparous (70% vs. 29%) and to have been infertile for >2 years (66% vs. 51%).
