Currently, no specific drug therapies are approved for the treatment of patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). However, there is a growing body of literature regarding the use of thiazolidinediones (TZDs), such as pioglitazone, for these patients. To synthesize the data, investigators conducted a meta-analysis of 8 TZD trials (5 using pioglitazone and 3 using rosiglitazone) involving a combined 516 patients with biopsy-proven NASH.
TZD therapy was associated with significant improvement in fibrosis of any stage by at least 1 point (odds ratio, 1.66; 95% confidence interval, 1.12–2.47) and improvement in advanced fibrosis by at least 2 points, from stage 3–4 to stage 0–2 (the primary outcome; OR, 3.15; 95% CI, 1.25–7.93).
