The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) for blood is more sensitive for colorectal cancer and advanced adenomas than the guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT). In randomized, controlled trials, patient adherence with test completion has also been superior with single-sample FIT compared with three-sample gFOBT.
In a study from a large U.S. Veterans Administration healthcare system, researchers retrospectively assessed 1-year adherence rates in 4662 patients with FIT orders and 3236 with gFOBT orders. Adherence to FIT was significantly higher than adherence to gFOBT (43% vs. 33%).
