Inpatient rehabilitation often is recommended following knee arthroplasty. In this Australian study, 165 adults (mean age, 67; mostly women) who had undergone total knee arthroplasty were randomized to 10 days of inpatient rehabilitation followed by 8 weeks of monitored home physical therapy (PT) or to the monitored home PT program alone. An additional 87 patients selected from those who declined randomization were enrolled in an unmonitored home PT program as an observation group. Inpatient rehabilitation consisted of 2 to 3 hours daily of structured one-to-one and group sessions focused on aerobic and strengthening exercises.
