As the recognition of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) improves, the postcolectomy manifestations of the syndrome are becoming increasingly important causes of morbidity and death. Investigators in Japan have now retrospectively reviewed the records of 80 patients with FAP who underwent surveillance gastroscopy during a 13-year period to describe the gastric findings and natural history of FAP.
During a mean follow-up of 6.5 years, fundic gland polyps (FGPs) were found in 51 patients (64%), and gastric neoplasms were found in 22 (28%). A total of 26 neoplasms were found in the 22 patients with neoplasms, and more than 1 neoplasm was found in 7 of these patients (32%).
