Late Relapse in Hodgkin Lymphoma

Patients in remission 5 years after initial therapy have a low, but ongoing risk for disease recurrence.

The majority of classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) patients who achieve complete remission with induction therapy are cured of their disease. When recurrences do occur, most arise within the first 5 years.

To assess the frequency of later relapse, investigators performed a retrospective analysis of patients enrolled in sequential German Hodgkin Study Group (GHSG) trials involving both early- and advanced-stage cHL patients. Those who relapsed after 5 years in remission were compared with those who relapsed ≤5 years after diagnosis and with those who remained in remission after 5 years.

At a median follow-up of 10.3 years, 4935 of 6840 cHL patients (76%) in the GHSG trials remained in complete remission after 5 years. Of these patients, 141 (2.9…
