Fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) is due to maternal antibodies that attack fetal platelet antigens, destroying platelets and increasing the risk for intracranial hemorrhage and death of the newborn. The optimal strategy for preventing recurrent episodes in women with a history of FNAIT is uncertain.
An international team of investigators conducted a systematic review of 26 published reports describing antenatal interventions for pregnant women with a history of FNAIT. Antibodies to HPA-1a were the cause of the neonatal thrombocytopenia in 72% to 100% of the reported patients.
