“Triple therapy” for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) consists of a combination of a long-acting β-agonist (LABA), a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA), and an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS). The 2017 GOLD guidelines recommend step-up to triple therapy for patients with frequent exacerbations and moderate-to-severe symptoms, despite treatment with a LABA/LAMA combination.
In this industry-funded international study, 2691 patients with ≥1 COPD exacerbation in the past year were randomized to one of the following treatments for 1 year:
