Elevation of the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is a poor prognostic sign in acute pancreatitis. To determine if it also predicts poor outcomes in acute nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB), investigators retrospectively assessed whether an increase in BUN level during the first 24 hours after hospital admission was associated with a composite endpoint of inpatient death, inpatient rebleeding, need for surgical or radiologic intervention, or endoscopic re-intervention.
The cohort comprised 357 patients admitted with AUGIB during a 10-year period. Ninety-one percent of follow-up BUN measurements (initial measurement occurred at presentation) were taken between 12 and 36 hours postadmission (range, 6–48 hours).
