Vaccination against influenza in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients may reduce the often-significant morbidity of influenza infection in these patients. Unfortunately, immune responses are lower in SOT recipients than in otherwise healthy individuals. In this phase 3, controlled, open-label, multicenter trial, investigators evaluated the safety and efficacy of a booster dose of influenza vaccine administered to liver, kidney, heart, and lung transplant recipients at least 30 days after transplantation. Participants were randomized to receive either a single standard dose of influenza vaccine (n=252) or the standard dose followed by a second (booster) dose 5 weeks later (n=247).
