The FDA has approved a sublingual allergen extract for the treatment of allergic rhinitis triggered by house dust mites.
Once-daily Odactra is approved for use in adults through age 65. With the first dose, patients should be monitored by a clinician for at least 30 minutes for potential adverse reactions. Benefits in nasal and eye allergy symptoms may not be seen until 8 to 14 weeks of daily use.
Randomized trials of 2500 patients found that those given Odactra had a 16%–18% reduction in symptoms and need for other medications relative to patients given placebo.
