Binge-eating disorder, newly defined in DSM-5, is diagnosed when binge-eating episodes occurring at least weekly for 3 months are accompanied by feelings that the eating is out of control and by shame, guilt, disgust, or depression about overeating. The prevalence of binge-eating disorder has reportedly increased in recent years, as have rates of obesity. Based on a set of six large, face-to-face, South Australian health surveys conducted from 1998 to 2015, investigators examined rates of objective binge eating (eating unusually large amounts of food at one time and feeling that eating was out of control) and psychological symptoms (distress, quality of life, and functional impairment).
